Why do I keep getting the following error?

The operation completed successfully.

This is usually related to an NTFS permissions problem. Check the permissions on the directory that contains the files to see if the IUSR_machine-name account has the appropriate permissions on the directory in order to be able to create the count file.

How do I get the counter to work with user sessions?

I didn't bother with a session count in this sample. If you're interested in that see my article "Counting Active Users!" and just remove the line that decrements the count!
